John's Biography

John O'Toole has served over 20 years as a School Trustee, Municipal Councillor, Durham Regional Councillor and Member of Provincial Parliament.

On October 2, 2003, John was re-elected for a third consecutive term as MPP for Durham Riding. He is currently the opposition's transportation critic at Queen's Park. He also serves on the Legislature's Standing Committee on Social Policy.

He was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1995 as the Member for Durham East. In 1999, he was re-elected to represent the new riding of Durham. He has served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Health.

As well as being a strong advocate for his constituents in Durham Riding, John successfully introduced a Private Member's Bill allowing owners of vintage vehicles to display Year of Manufacture licence plates. His Private Member's Bill to proclaim March 17th as Irish Heritage Day was passed in the Ontario Legislature and received royal assent in 2004. He has also introduced Private Members Bills on the safe use of cell phones while driving and on income tax incentives for public transit.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, John is a graduate of the University of Toronto. Prior to being elected MPP, he worked for over thirty years in a variety of positions at General Motors in Ontario and Quebec.

Before arriving at Queen's Park, Mr. O'Toole had been elected to the following positions: School Board Trustee and Local and Regional Councillor for the Town of Newcastle. (Now the Municipality of Clarington, in the Region of Durham.) As a municipal Councillor, he served as chair of three municipal budgets before being elected as a Durham Regional Councillor. He has also served as chair for Public Works in Clarington and as a member of the Regional Health and Social Services Committee.

John O'Toole and his wife, Peggy, an elementary school teacher who retired in 2006, have lived in Durham Region for 25 years. They have raised five children and have four grandchildren.

John's community service has included municipal and provincial Library Boards, the Conservation Authority, the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC), and the Bowmanville Museum Board. It is his privilege to represent the people in the great Riding of Durham, which includes Clarington and Scugog as well as north and east Oshawa.
